Dave Kindig, the mastermind behind Kindig-It Design and star of Bitchin’ Rides, is known for his impressive custom builds, and one of his standout projects is the customization of a classic Ford Mustang. The challenge? Turning a vintage Mustang into a modern-day performance beast while preserving its iconic design. In one of his most high-profile builds, Kindig took on a 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback, transforming it from a nostalgic symbol of American muscle into a sleek, high-performance machine.

This was no ordinary restoration; it was a complete overhaul that involved blending the old with the new to create something extraordinary. The 1965 Ford Mustang, while beloved for its charm, needed significant upgrades to meet the high-performance standards of today’s car enthusiasts.


The Kindig-It team took great care in the Mustang's body modifications. The front and rear fascias were custom-made to give the car a more aggressive stance. The rocker panels were extended, and the hood was stretched to accommodate a modern powertrain. Custom hood vents and rear air directors were added for better airflow and a sportier aesthetic. These subtle yet effective changes gave the Mustang a sleeker, more contemporary look while staying true to its classic roots.


Powering the Beast: A Modern-Day Engine Upgrade

Of course, the heart of any Mustang is its engine, and Kindig ensured that this build would deliver both in performance and sound. Under the hood, a 6.9-liter Ford engine built by John Kaase Racing was installed, packing a massive punch with over 800 horsepower. This high-performance engine was paired with a six-speed Tremec Magnum transmission, allowing the Mustang to harness its newfound power efficiently.


To handle this much horsepower, the Mustang was fitted with a state-of-the-art suspension system. The Roadster Shop Fast Track independent rear and front suspension (IRS/IFS) chassis provided the necessary handling and stability, ensuring that the car could perform just as well on the track as it would on the street. Custom stainless headers and Borla mufflers added to the car’s performance and produced the deep, resonating exhaust note that muscle car fans crave​.

A custom Billet Specialties D-shaped steering wheel added to the modern feel while paying homage to the Mustang’s racing heritage.

Custom floor panels, a modified firewall, and fabricated tubs ensured that the Mustang was ready for any challenge, whether cruising down the highway or roaring down a racetrack​.
